Sprint's Mobile WiMAX Network

Sprint ( Sprint Nextel Corporation is the third largest cellular operator in USA, with 53.7 million subscribers) is engaged in design and deployment of Mobile WiMAX broadband network in full-swing. The Chicago and Washington D.C. areas have been chosen as initial WiMAX service areas with additional markets to be identified based on market-readiness estimates. The first market may be launched by the end of the year and they plan to reach at least 100 million people by year-end 2008. Sprint's WiMax network is based on the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard, operates in the 2.5GHz band and is also termed as 4G network. The core 802.16e s contains three different air interfaces: single carrier, OFDM ( Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)and OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Domain Multiple Access). Single carrier systems are targeted at the 10-66 GHz band, point-to-point for backhaul . OFDM (more commonly referred to as 802.16d) is the first WiMAX standard, intended for fixed broadband...

Sony Ericsson-S500 Slim Slider

Sony Ericsson will be launching the S500 very soon. The iPhone effect is prompting ever handset vendor and every other carrier expect AT&T to get something out as quickly as possible to stop the tide that everyone is expecting with the iPhone launch in June. The sleek slider features a compact design at 3.9 by 1.9 by 0.6 inches and is rather lightweight at 3.3 ounces. The S500 will be shipping in two colors, "Mysterious Green" and "Spring Yellow," which, according to Sony Ericsson , were selected to reflect nature. However, the more notable style feature is the handset's lights that automatically glow to indicate different times of the day or the changing seasons. The S500 will also feature various menus that will constantly change as the day moves into night. The S500 does include some substance with its style, and offers up EDGE connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0, USB support and a 2-inch QVGA display. The handset also has a robust multimedia feature set wit...

Nanotechnology in Electronics

Image
You may have heard of nanotechnology ( Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale-- typically smaller than 1 micrometer) finding it way in personal care products and some health products but soon it may be replacing the Silicon the element that heralded the electronic revolution. The two contenders to dethrone Silicon may be Graphene and carbon Nanotubes . Graphene is a flat single layer of carbon atoms bonded together in a hexagonal pattern of graphite. Graphene has some extraordinary electronic properties like a zero effective mass and like elementary particle obeys Einstein's relativity instead of Newtonian mechanics. Graphene is much easier to work with and scientists has been able to use standard electronic techniques to make Graphene transistors. Carbon Nanotubes are extremely thin , hollow cylinders made of carbon atoms and have similar properties as Graphene but are much harder to build into complex devices.Recent research in Nanot...

Email, Web, and Malware Threat Trends

Here is a report by Secure Computing Research to provide a view of the Internet threat landscape based on R&D on last weeks data Mail/Spam Volume Malicious messages made up 84.0% of all email last week, continuing the downward slope of the last few weeks Malware An average of 100 total and 0 new viruses were seen daily last week. Trojans are now the most popular type of malware, comprising over 60% of all new malware samples Zombies An average of 363,491 new zombies were detected daily last week, a 8.6% increase from prior week, yet it is still dramaticaly down from the 500,000+ daily average seen on a regular basis since last December Web Threats An average of 17478 total new malicious websites were detected last week, an 8.74% decrease from the prior week

Wi-Fi for Enterprise

The latest sibling of the Wi-Fi standards 802.11n is expected to be fully delivered by end of 2008. With over-the air (OTA) estimates up to 200+ Mbps and Media Access Control Layer, Service Access Point (MAC SAP) Estimates up to 100 Mbps it should be fully capable of serving the Enterprise requirements.802.11n uses technology like multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), smart antenna technique for transmitting multiple data streams through multiple antennas and advance signal processing to achieve such throughput. Most of the 801.11n products are backward compatible with previous-generation 802.11a/b/g wireless technologies can connect seamlessly to 802.11n-based networks and vice-verse. 802.11b and 802.11g -- as well as 802.11n when using the 2.4 GHz band -- divide the 2.4 GHz spectrum into 14 overlapping, staggered channels whose center frequencies are 5 megahertz (MHz) apart.

iUnit- Personal Mobility

Image
While everybody is talking about iPhone, let talk a bit about iUnit a “personal mobility” vehicle recently exhibited by Toyota in Japan.Operating on the battery it addresses, the two most pressing problems of our time--gas prices and global warming. With its lightweight and ultra compact size it moves fast and it reclines to go even faster. It is also fitted with a autopilot, so no driving tensions. The above picture shows Japanese Minister Akira Amari taking joy rides on a iUnit. More info at http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/news/04/1203_1e.html

Content-Centric Security-CCS a new approach

A new approach to security is evolving with the development of what is called as Content-Centric Security- CCS . CCS is a self-authenticating content utilized, proprietary means to embed data and logical content within content that securely binds files with embedded crypto elements. Thus CCS is a new way to solve most of the problems associated with conventional network-centric security. As we know all networks face the difficult problem of authenticating participants, trust levels, devices, applications, and content. Existing state-of-art authentication procedures are based on centralized authorities and are very poorly suited to end-node and cross domain exchange. CCS substantially simplifies existing authentication methodologies through a novel solution to cope with growing privacy concerns, amounts and types of digital content, the number of people and assigned trust levels of those participating, and the variety of devices required to support “Security to the Edge” strategies,...
